Chris Idema is a Rotterdam-based architect and maker.

Inspired by humor, the built environment and the randomness of everyday life, his work is based on a long practice of live sketching his surroundings through bold black lines and the interest in craft. Explorative with his technique, he recently began mesh-printing art prints created from experimenting with combinations of hand drawings, 3D modeling and digital illustration. Through this process, he introduces color into his work, which serves to emphasize the highly contrasting elements of his work

ON REPETITION

2023
Silkscreenprints
25x25cm 250gr paper

Limited to 4 pieces

In my series of nine silkscreen prints, I delve into the concept of repetitive patterns while exploring the theme of escaping from the monotony. Each print showcases a 3x3x3 grid of boxes, within them, human forms, attempting to break free of this repetitive structure, symbolising the desire to escape the  constraints of repetition.

As a silk screen-printer, I always strive for close-perfection in my prints, carefully examining each edition for flaws. However, while working on this series, I intentionally embrace and highlight the imperfections and defects that (un)naturally occur within the silkscreen printing process. By doing so, I emphasise the unpredictability and variation that can arise within the repetition of my work, as demonstrated by the doubling in the series.

Through this exploration, my series seeks to challenge the notion of repetition as a purely monotonous and mechanical process. Instead, it invites me and you, the viewer, to recognize the potential for individuality, and the pursuit of breaking free from repetitive patterns. By incorporating both the desire to escape and the celebration of imperfections, this work engages with the theme of "On Repetition" in a thought-provoking and visually compelling manner.
